Match day has come and gone.YEAH!!
We are going to the University of Tennessee, Chattanooga, for one year , the Intern year.
Then we are coming back to University of Florida for Radiology Residency, which is another 4 years!
We are so excited and relieved to know where we will be living for the next five years!
It might sound crazy to leave for a year and come back, but here's why we want to do it.
Top 5 reasons we want to go to Chattanooga:
1) Chattanooga offers a Transitional year, as opposed to a Medicine year here at UF.
This means Philip will rotate between different disciplines of Medicine instead of just Internal Medicine.
2) Philip WILL NOT have to work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week for 12 months. Let us not forget the overnight call Philip would have to do on a regular basis.
3) It's a big city with TONS to do together as a family. The 'things to do' list is very long! This is so exciting. With Philip having more available time then the last 4 years we plan on many family outings!
4) Because it is a Transitional year schedule, Philip will be able to have Sundays off so he won't have to miss church.
5) Philip's brothers family went there for the Intern year and encouraged us to seriously consider the perks of moving 6 hours away so our family can actually see Philip during his intern year.
The intern year has very aweful hours BUT NOT AT CHATTANOOGA!!!
Top 10 reasons we want to stay at UF:
1) One of the Top Radiology programs in the South East for reputation, training and Fellowships.
2) Free Health Insurance!
3) We own a home here, which is zoned for 'A' schools and in the perfect area of the city.
4) Philip's Family Close by
5) No State income tax, low cost of living
6) Disneyworld, Kennedy Space Center, Seaworld, St. Augustine, Urban Meyer, beaches, the Temple, and much more near-by in Orlando
7) Established relationships with Radiology faculty -All the Attendings know Philip here and are excited to have him in the program with his brother, Dr. Kurt Scherer.
8) The University here offers many perks for Residents; 4 weeks off a year. text book & supplies money, free health coverage, family friendly, and most importantly awesome football games!
9) The weather - aka no snow! Max will be able to play outside almost all the time.
10) Gainesville is a safe city. A few of the places Philip really liked programs in were on the top 10 most dangerous city list. Then he would have to commute 45 minutes to an hour to and from the hospital everyday. In Gainesville it is possible to get to the hospital in about 12 mintues from our home.
Philip and I are so excited that everything worked out well with the match! There are only 11 spots offered here in the Radiology program, it it very competetive to get in. Some of Philip's classmates also wanted to train here, but sadly they didn't get in. Congratulations Philip, you did it! The next big day is May 22 when he will officailly become an MD. Then he will be Dr. Philip Scherer.
